千百年來，鬼神的存在與否一直是個爭論性的問題。清朝蒲松齡（1640-1715）的《聊齋誌異》，是一致公認不論在通俗上抑或學術上，都是中國文學領域中最傑出的經典巨著之一。在《聊齋》的四百多個故事裡面，這些鬼怪和精靈們都被活生生地擬人化了。他們與人們生活在人的世界裡，同時也生活在他們自己的世界裡。他們往來於這兩個世界是非常地容易與頻繁。雖然他們都具有超自然的的能力，這本書中的精靈們卻都喜歡以人的形象出現。當他們居住在人的世界中時，他們的形象及舉止動作都和人們一模一樣。因此，在書中的故事裡，有時候就很難分辨出誰是人而誰又是精靈。

《聊齋》的原作者蒲松靈逝世於三個世紀以前，如今作者以中英文比較文學的方式，在美國重新改寫輯錄二十三個《聊齋》故事，透過作家的筆觸，期許本書引領東西方的讀者一探清朝以來最偉大的“中國鬼故事”精華版。

  於1932年出生於江蘇省灌雲縣。1949 年去了臺灣，1957 年畢業於國立臺灣大學，1964 年來美國留學，就讀於西密歇根大學。
  1987至2002 年間他為懷俄明州瑞靈頓市（Riverton, Wyoming) 英文日報，The Ranger，撰寫每週專欄。
  
  除了六百多篇的英文報紙專欄外，他還出版過六本英文書、七本漢英對照書、一本波（波蘭文）漢對照書、及兩本中文書等共十六本書。
  他和他的妻子趙耀文居住在美國德州休士頓。

自序Preface

千百年來，鬼神的存在與否一直是個爭論性的問題。

For thousands of years, the existence of spirits has always been a controversial subject.

雖然人們在超自然的探討上從來沒有獲得具體的答案，每一個國家都有很多的鬼故事。

Although mankind's inquiry into the supernatural issue has never produced substantial answers, every country abounds in ghost stories.

中國是世界上最古老的具有高度文化的國家之一，有數不清的超自然故事一代又一代地流傳。清朝蒲松齡（1640-1715）的《聊齋誌異》，是一致公認不論在通俗上抑或學術上，都是中國文學領域中最傑出的經典巨著之一。

China is one of the oldest highly civilized nations in the world. There are countless supernatural tales told generation after generation. Liao Zhai Zi Yi by Pu Songling (1640-1715) from the Qing Dynasty is unanimously acknowledged, both popularly and academically, as one of the most remarkable works as this sort in the canon of Chinese literature.

在《聊齋》的四百多個故事裡面，這些鬼怪和精靈們都被活生生地擬人化了。他們與人們生活在人的世界裡，同時也生活在他們自己的世界裡。他們往來於這兩個世界是非常地容易與頻繁。雖然他們都具有超自然的的能力，這本書中的精靈們卻都喜歡以人的形象出現。當他們居住在人的世界中時，他們的形象及舉止動作都和人們一模一樣。因此，在書中的故事裡，有時候就很難分辨出誰是人而誰又是精靈。當這個秘密在精巧的設計下被披露時，往往也就是這個故事的高潮。

In the more than four hundred short stories in Liao Zhai, ghosts and spirits were all vividly personified. They lived with humans in the human world, and also in their own world. They traveled from one world to the other easily and frequently. Although they had the advantage of having supernatural powers, the spirits in the book still liked to show themselves in the human form. They looked and acted like human beings when they lived in the human world. Thus, in the stories of the book, it is sometimes hard to distinguish which one was human and which was spirit. The ingenious revelation of that secret, therefore, often becomes the most exciting part of the story.

當你發現中國鬼故事是如此地神秘動人時，你可能又回到了那個爭論性的老問題﹕誰又真正地看見過鬼了﹖

As fascinating as one may find in the Chinese ghost stories, one may still return to the old controversial question: Who has ever really seen a ghost?

在回答這個問題以前，請讓我來先問你幾個問題。

Before answering this question, let me ask you a few questions first.

每年秋季，總有百萬隻以上的桔黃色小蝴蝶飛向那百里以外遙遠的山邊森林，可這些蝴蝶中沒有一隻曾經去過那兒。他們是如何找到路線的﹖

Every fall, there are always millions of tiny monarch butterflies flying to the remote mountain forests hundreds of miles away, while none of the butterflies have ever been there before. How do they find the routes?

每年冬季，總有一些數千磅重的海象穿越數百里長的公海，游回到他們當年出生地的海岸。他們是如何找到路線的﹖

Every winter, there are always many elephant seals of several thousand pounds navigating hundreds of miles of open sea to return to the beaches where they were born. How do they find the routes?

這不過是自然界中無數難以找到答案的兩個舉例而已。動物的美妙世界裡充滿了很多的神秘，科學家們迄今仍然不能夠找出滿意的答案如何及為什麼。正因為我們找不出答案，同樣地我們也不能回答《聊齋》故事中的很多問題。

These are only two examples of the countless unanswerable questions among the natural world. The marvelous world of animals is full of so many mysteries that our scientists are still unable to give us satisfactory answers how or why. Just as we cannot find the answers, neither can we answer the questions in the stories of Liao Zhai.

你的一生是一個故事，我的一生是一個故事。故事就是故事，只要是好的故事，我們就不必要太過分去懷疑這些故事的真實性，而無寧去重視故事中的真理性。

Your life is a story. My life is a story. Stories are stories. As long as they are good stories, we would rather not question too much the truthfulness of the tales, but rather concentrate on the truth in the stories.

在讀了很多遍《聊齋》後，我必須說，絕大多數的故事都是沒有意義的怪異事件之報告而已，其餘的很多故事又都是典型的中國式故事，是很難會引起西方世界裡非中國人士的興趣的。

Having read Liao Zhai many times, I have to say that the majority of the stories are but meaningless reports of strange happenings. And many others are but typical Chinese stories which are hardly able to raise the interest of non-Chinese readers in the Western world.

因此，這本書中的二十三個《聊齋》故事是經過我審慎挑選過比較最有興趣的部份。為了使英語系的讀者們獲得更大的滿足，我往往又將故事予以修訂後重新改寫。

Therefore, the twenty three stories in this Liao Zhai book are the most interesting ones which were selected by me very carefully. In order to best satisfy and entertain the English-speaking readers, I have revised and rewritten just about each tale.

《聊齋》的原作者蒲松靈逝世於三個世紀前。現在，我將他的部份作品以英文重新改寫，顯然地我並沒有獲得他的同意。我只希望他在他現在的世界（鬼的世界）裡，對於我在我的世界（人的世界）中所做的工作不要過分地反對。如同他的書中所說的，他現在一定也具有超自然的法力了，甚至於也許有一天，他會來到我現在的世界中專程拜訪我，感謝我將他寫的故事介紹給西方英語世界。

Pu Songling, the original author of Liao Zhai, passed away more than three centuries ago. I have now rewritten part of his works in English. Obviously, I did not get his permission. All I hope is that he will not object too much in his present world (ghost's world) about the work I'm doing in my present world (human's world). Like the heroes and heroines in his book, he may also have the supernatural powers. Even one of these days, he may come to my world specially paying me a visit, to thank me for introducing his works to the English-speaking world.
所以我在耐心地等待這興奮的一刻到來。
So, I'm patiently waiting for the happy moment to come.
